This is a timeless book about Italians being Italian. I had the privilege of being with the writer when she wrote the book, and so, I may be biased, as I am her son. At the time of writing the book, my mother and I lived in Rome. We did not live together, but for a while economic circumstances caused us to share an apartment. That was during the time that she wrote Dear Friends and Darling Romans.
It was not her idea to write the book, but the idea of her friends, most of whom were writers. Eugene Walter, a wonderful writer, encouraged my mother to write the book, because she "told such great stories." And that is what the book is all about - series of great stories.
In the book, my mother takes the literary license to refer to me as her "cousin." She was in her 40s at the time, and a beautiful woman - having a grown son did not fit the picture, at least not for the book. Still, during the years we lived in Rome, we were usually together.
My mother was an extremely talented writer. Everything she wrote was published. Dear friends and Darling Romans is a classic, and it still graces the kiosks of Rome. If you really want to have an enjoyable visit to Italy, this is the book for you.
