This fascinating and lushly illustrated work is not only appetite-inducing, but extremely informative. From the documentary evidence tracing variations amongst cream buns and where they can be said to have originated, to their impact on culture, trade and mercantilism - it's hard to believe Showalter can fit so much into such a brief volume. He covers the debatable inclusion of jam; clotted/whipped/butter cream (sweetened or not) Asian variants involving coconut; Italian variants involving dried fruit; variants with crême pâtissière from South Africa; and the controversial inclusion of the French éclair which provokes strong reactions from cream bun aficionados. Essential for any student of food history while also absorbing for the casual consumer.
