A concise, provocative and informative examination of influential urban thinker Jane Jacobs from the broad perspective of several twenty-first-century conversations in philosophy, policy and technology studies. A brief intellectual biography of Jacobs is combined with a summary of some of her principal ideas. Slabbert contextualizes Jacobs interestingly in relation to not only such urban figures as Lewis Mumford and Robert Moses but also to philosophers like Herbert Spencer and Oswald Spengler and the overall development of policy and philosophic thought. He concludes that ‘the suggestive value of her work outweighs the truth or falsity of any of its specific content.’

In this fertile and compact article philosopher N.J. Slabbert, who is known for his interdisciplinary approach to ideas and thinkers, correctly positions Jane Jacobs as an interdisciplinary thinker who transcends the field of urban studies. This thoughtful, well-researched appreciation of Jacobs is likely to grow as the wide relevance of Jacobs' thinking is increasingly appreciated. Slabbert notes that Jacobs' work cannot be regarded as the last word on our concept of the city as her perspective clearly had flaws and limitations, but he is right when he makes the case that her position in the pantheon of great urban thinkers is secure.
