Hal Kelly was his stage name - my granddad's name was Harold Richard Smith - and I am his grandson, Garret Smith. I remember him practicing the cornet in my grandparent's house and hearing stories from my dad about when they grew up in New Orleans how my granddad would play on all the hot clubs on Burbon Street during the 70's - he even played for the president of Peru - he was flown out there with my grandmother to play over there.
This album of classic jazz standards is a lot of fun and captures the true essence of dixieland jazz in New Orleans perfectly. I've researched other versions of the songs played on this album and I have to say that I like the liveliness and soul that this album brings way more than others - I admit part of that is because its my granddad singing and playing but honestly it just sounds better! His singing is great and has a lot of soul that carries throughout the songs and definitely the melodies he plays on the cornet are head and shoulders the best I've heard in these jazz standards - so much vibrato and again - soul - in every note.
He was a master at his craft, he passed away in 2003 and my grandmother followed him six years later. This album is a nice reminder about not only an era in music in a place that is associated with pure fun and its festive environment but also for me and my family members as the best lasting gift a granddad could leave his family to remind them of his love of music and his family.
I hope you enjoy this album as much as I do - even if the sentimental diatribe doesn't affect you - at it's core "A Night in New Orleans" is simply a fun and expertly played album.
