This opera by Philip Glass was first performed in 2005. Waiting for the Barbarians is based on the 1980 novel by the South African writer, J.M. Coetzee, who also wrote "Disgrace", "Life & Times of Michael K", and "Diary of a Bad Year", along with winning Nobel Prize. The libretto is by playwright Christopher Hampton, who wrote "Dangerous Liaisons" and "Atonement." Magistrate of a frontier town comes becomes part of a drama of a military force waging a war against barbarians who are considered a threat to the future of the empire. The military uses torture to wag its war and when the magistrate defends a girl who has been tortured, he becomes a victim, too.
