Written in verse, this story of a girl of color growing to womanhood, and moving through the world as an immigrant, resonates on many levels. Kaur's depiction of the blatant (and subtle) racism and misogyny her protagonist endures cuts like a knife. Then the author lifts the reader up with her portrayal of the power of the human spirit to overcome these obstacles with strength, courage, and grace.
