As political histories go, this Greenwood series is right on the mark. And this addition is no exception. While relatively brief, Harding's The History of Panama is a superb primer on the economic and political evolution of the isthmus. The role of the United States in creating and cultivating Panamanian politics is very well done, especially the description of Torrijos, easily Latin America's most complex political figure.

In addition to being loaded with interesting historical tidbits, tales of political intrigue, and the multifaceted characters of Panama's history, what really stands out in this book is the writing style. Academic writing can be informative, to be sure, but sometime deadly dray and dull. In Harding's case, he balances information with an almost literary style that is a pleasure to read.

Highly recommended.
