Notably absent from this movie is Utah Phillips, who popularized the notoriety of Ammon Hennacy from 1990 until his death, four years after this motion picture was released. The plot line of the documentary is the life of Ammon Hennacy. Phillips was the number one disciple of Ammon, and viewed the film at a Catholic Worker gathering in 2006, and did not think as highly of the editing as I do. I am re-inspired by these stories of twentieth century spiritual activism for peace each time i see the DVD. And even if Phillips is correct that the filmmaking prowess leaves something to be desired (that it's more of a collage-u-mentary), the smattering of testimonies to democracy and conscience contained in this film still make it worthwhile viewing.
One of the definitions of "anarchy" is "democracy taken seriously" and this movie only touches slightly on the pros and cons of anarchism. Phillips said anarchy is not a noun, but an adjective describing the tension between moral autonomy and political authority. I think A Peace of the Anarchy also illuminates that tension, and does follow the spirit of Ammon Hennacy. To quote an FBI agent who tailed Ammon Hennacy for a spell, "Ammon spoke in his usual muddled way," at a typical speaking engagement where he was the star. Now that he's a supporting cast-member in this documentary (albeit post-mortem), it makes sense that the style of filmmaking is also muddled.
